11/8/2021 0 Comments "Betrayal!" Miyako Island residents decry Japan's Self Defense Force missile baseResidents of Myaku (Miyako), one of the Luchu (Ryukyu) Islands south of Okinawa, are condemning the creation of a Japanese Self Defense Force missile base, saying they have been betrayed by Mayor Kazuyuki Zakimi, who was elected on the premise of stopping the base.
The citizens of Myaku have strongly opposed the base on the grounds that it makes them a target for attack, takes away their land, and destroys the environment. They are pointing out that there was no real choice in the election, and that both candidates were controlled by Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) that supports the U.S. and Japanese military occupation of Luchu. Mayor Zikimi is claiming that legally there is nothing he can do to stop the base. "Luchu is still a colony of Japan," tweeted @namitan_916 in response. "Japanese laws and procedures are imposed by the colonizers. Originally [under independence], there was no reason for Luchuans to comply [with Japanese law]."
