UNESCO recognizes that there are ten different Indigenous Ryukyuan languages, all of which are endangered. There are also dozens of different dialects of the various Ryukyuan languages based on region.

The Loochooan Writing System
One of the major contemporary problems Loochooans face in revitalizing our written language is trying to decide which writing system is best for our needs.
Most historical Loochooan documents (prior to Japan's invasion in the late 1800s) were written in Chinese.
Chinese was the preferred written language so much that in some cases documents that had originally been written in Kana were later translated into Chinese.

Today, due to the ongoing Japanese oppression of Ryukyu, the Ryukyuan languages are typically written in Kana mixed with Chinese characters. There are several major problems with this method, as described below. Many have suggested the creation of a unique Ryukyuan writing method, similar to how Koreans created Hangul, though this has not yet happened. Others suggest writing in the Latin or Roman alphabet, which also has some problems.

- Can convey the pronunciation of words.

- Tends to be a long written language, taking up much space.
- Somewhat difficult to read whole documents in, particularly compared to Chinese, though maybe not as difficult as Hiragana.

Japanese, however, have only inhabited Japan since approximately the year 0, give or take a few hundred years. Thus the Loochooan languages certainly predate the Japanese language. Thus, the language group should rightfully be called the "Proto-Loochooan language group," or some derivative.

While English is also a foreign colonial language, it is one of the linga francas of the world, commonly used in international affairs such as business, finance, diplomacy, cross-cultural exchange, and academics. English is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. The Japanese language, however, is not useful in this sense, and is only useful when communicating with Japanese people. Therefore Japanese is a completely useless language for Loochooans to learn, except for individuals who do business with Japanese people.
