DEAR PRESIDENT TRUMP -
Please help Make Okinawa Great Again!
Please help Make Okinawa Great Again!
Since time immemorial Okinawa was a peaceful, prosperous independent country known as Luchu (sometimes spelled LewChew, LooChoo, or Ryukyu). Luchu maintained peaceful, friendly, mutually-beneficial relations with all nations, and signed a treaty with the United States during the nineteenth century. As a symbol of friendship, Luchu even gave America a gift of limestone which was used in the construction of the Washington Monument. Although small, Luchu was wealthy; it was said that poverty did not exist in Luchu.
Unfortunately, Luchu was invaded and taken over by Japan in 1879 as the first of Japan's many imperial conquests leading up to World War II. Fearing that Luchuans (Okinawans) would side with the U.S. and its allies, Japanese soldiers murdered many Luchuan civilians, massacring around one-third of the native Okinawan population. After the war, Luchu's independence should have been restored, but instead it was "given" back to Japan in 1972. Since then, the Japanese have practiced intense discrimination against Luchuans / Okinawans, which is the main source of tension in Okinawa today.
Okinawans are not anti-American, anti-Japanese, anti-Chinese, etc., but simply want peace, don't want to be involved in another devastating war, and want to restore our sovereignty and self-rule. We want to Make Ryukyu Great Again.
By restoring Luchu's independence, America and Luchu can sign a security agreement directly with each other, bypassing the middle man. This will greatly improve relations between the U.S. military and Luchuans (Okinawans), which will benefit both the United States and Okinawa in promoting our shared goals of peace, security, trade, finance, and economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region. With the assistance of the United States, Luchu can create its own National Defense Force and work together with America to secure Luchu's borders and protect our freedom and democracy from all foreign threats.
Therefore we respectfully ask that the United States please restore Luchu / Okinawa's rightful independence. Thank you for your time and attention.
