1/17/2024 0 Comments UN expert Alfred de Zayas cites Peace For Okinawa Coalition in latest book, The Human Rights IndustryAlfred de Zayas, a retired high-ranking United Nations official, has mentioned the Peace For Okinawa Coalition in his latest book The Human Rights Industry. This comes in the context of the struggle of Luchuans to restore our rights, including Luchu's independence.
Zayas has held numerous posts over his long career with the United Nations, including UN Independent Expert on the Promotion of a Democratic and Equitable International Order (2012-18), senior lawyer with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Secretary of the UN Human Rights Committee, and Chief of the Petitions Department. Since 2019 Zayas has been a frequent collaborator with the Peace For Okinawa Coalition, having appeared in a number of our conferences and webinars. In 2021, the Coalition's president Robert Kajiwara interviewed Zayas regarding his book Building a Just World Order in which he voices support for Luchuan (Ryukyuan / Okinawan) rights. During the interview, Zayas stated that the construction of the U.S. military base at Henoko, Okinawa is illegal. For decades, Luchuans (Okinawans) have fiercely opposed the base's construction, yet the United States and Japan continue to ignore Luchuan voices. Zayas has long supported the rights of Indigenous peoples around the world, including Luchuans (Ryukyuans / Okinawans), Hawaiians, Native Americans, and numerous others. The Peace For Okinawa Coalition extends our heartfelt gratitude towards Dr. Zayas for including us in The Human Rights Industry.
