In 1591 Japan informed Ryukyu of their plans to invade China via Korea, and demanded Ryukyu assist. Ryukyu, which has always had peaceful and friendly relations with both China and Korea, ignored the request. This gave Satsuma clan of Japan an "excuse" to invade Ryukyu, which they did in 1609.
